CONFLICTING CLAIMS
NAZIS & SEA LOSSES
(Rcc. noon.)
RUGBY, Jan. 9.
Yet another example of the fantastically confused figures put out in German propaganda is seen in the shipping losses claimed against the Allies for December.
The total of the German daily claims came to 115,700 tons, yet on January 4 the Germans mustered a total claim for December of 257,000 tons. The Germans appear to have tried to confuse the issue by claiming that 115,000 tons of this was sunk by U-boats alone.
The total of the daily claims for U-boats, however, was only 98,000 tons. What the real totals are remains a secret of the British Admiralty.
In informed circles in London, it is suggested that in the near future American warships will be escorting convoys the whole way across the Atlantic to British shores. This simplification of the convoy system is likely to add further to the difficulties of the German Atlantic raiders. —8.0. W.
