CAMPAIGN IN CHINA

LONDON, January 9

Severe fighting is reported on the mainland of China. Today's Chungking communique reports that for three days Chinese forces have been counter-attacking the outer, defences of Canton, the great port of southern China, which the Japanese occupied over three years ago. . ■ The fighting is concentrated in the northern and north-eastern suburbs of the city, which are being attacked bytwo Chinese columns. Forty miles away from Canton a furious battle is in progress against Chinese positions; . ' At Changsha, 500 miles north ot Canton, the Chinese infantry and artillery are still threatening the Japanese forces trapped north-east of the city.
