SOVIET LANDINGS IN THE CRIMEA
LONDON, January 7.
A big battle is raging in the Karelian Isthmus, and the Soviet advance in the Crimea continues. A Stockholm dispatch says that a grim battle is in progress on the Finnish front. It is now in its fourth day, and the fighting is the heaviest since the Finnish offensive began last September. It is stated that for the first time the Russians in this area have considerable armed forces at their disposal. A surprise landing by Russian forces on the island of Hogland is reported from Stockholm. Hogland is in the Gulf of Finland, 120 miles from Kronstadt, and was seized by the Finns last autumn. It is now said to have been recaptured. Reports from the Crimea, where large German forces are threatened with encirclement, tell of fresh Soviet landings.
