DOWN TO MINIMUM

PUBLIC WORKS STAFF

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 7

Reduction of the staff of the Public Works Department to a minimum level has been reached, said the, Minister (Mr. Armstrong) in an interview. Even now, he said, essential work was being held up.

The numbej of men directly employed by the Department was fewer than 8000, said Mr. Armstrong. In addition, possibly 2000 men were employed by contractors to the Department and by local bodies on work subsidised by the Department.

"The figure is the lowest for many years," the Minister said. "It is as low as we can possibly help. Essential work is being held up even now. We are now concentrating upon main essentials."
