A BRILLIANT FILLY
BREEDING OF CLARICE
(By "Binocular.")
In winning the Nursery Handicap on the second day of the Wobdville Meeting Clarice showed a brilliant turn of speed, indicating that further successes should come her way. During the holidays she added the Borough Handicap at New Plymouth and Juvenile Handicap at Stratford, making three successive wins. The filly is by Solicitor-General from the Australianbred mare Royal Flavour, who was by Claro from the Linacre—Bewitch mare Forest Witch. An elder half-sister, Royal Helena (by Iliad) won a race as a two-yevir-old at Victoria Park (New South Wales) in 1936. Bewitch, the great-grandam of Clarice, was a sister to Straga, dam of Hymestra, who was a good performer in New Zealand. A chestnut colt, a half-brother by Broiefort to Clarice, is on the list for the National Yearling Sales. Change in Dates. As a result of the Wellington Summer Meeting being held on January 17 and 24, the auctioneers controlling the National Yearling Sales have decided to conduct them on the Thursday and Friday preceding the second day instead of on January 21 and 23. For Trentham. Hearth was accepted for in the main event both at Waikouaiti and Oamaru, but owing to track conditions was produced in the Flying Handicap at Oamaru only. She went out favourite, but after being prominent in the middle stages finished a long way back in fourth- place. Hearth does not favour soft going, but was given the race in view of a trip to Trentham. Good Family. A bright future was predicted for Hugme in the early stages of her career, but she has not been called upon to do much racing. She won at her last start in the old season, and she added a brace of wins at the recent Hawke's Bay fixture. She is by Bulandshar from Fondle, a sister to Cuddle, and is owned by Mr. J. A. Hennah, of Padishah fame. Great Innings. The Takanini trainer F. Smith had a great innings at the Auckland Meeting, registering wins with Route March, Kentish^ Representative, Cambria, Cor-nish,-and Beau Vaals. T. Green, who commenced his riding career at this end of the island under R. E. Hatch at Awapuni, staged something of a comeback by piloting four winners,' one more than A. E. Ellis, who was second on the list of winning horsemen. Confused. When referring to the winner of the Aldworth Stakes at Marton in yester- | day's issue the name was given as Spearform instead of Classform, the former being the dam of the successful performer. Spearform, who was got. by Greyspear from the Bonif orm mare Merriform, also carried the colours of Mr. C. W. Boyd, and Classform was her first foal. > More Modest. Originally engaged for the Royal Stakes on the final day at Ellerslie, Fight On made the trip to the Marton Meeting instead, where he contested the maiden event each day with, out drawing any great attention to himself.' He is a very big three-year-old who would not appreciate a heavy track, and he will no doubt accomplish more later on, for he is by Defoe from Polly Ann. I Fitting Reward. The success of Gunyah in the New Year Hack Handicap on the opening day at Marton came as a fitting reward, for the Myosotis gelding had met with misfortune at Otaki, where a false start led to Gunyah and Advocate bolting a round. Handily placed all the way in the New Year Handicap, Gunyah's young rider, R. J. Atkins, kept to the rail till approaching the straight, when he went forward to challenge. Gunyah won, but" was possibly a shade lucky to hold off Patu-Po, who came home particularly well. Should (Improve. Unlucky enough to be squeezed out at the start of the New Year Hack Handicap, the mile and a quarter event on the opening day at Marton. Poutu did well to get up for fourth, even though the late arrival of Patu-Po forced him back a placing just short of the post. Patu-Po is a big raking type and like Patu promises to go further in the game, even though he. let his backers down on the second day, the heavy going being against him. ■~-.. Quick Return. Moutoa Bond, who races in the same interests as Master Lackham and is also trained by P. Burgess at Trentham, brought to her owner, Mr. F. S. Easton a. quick return following the transfer. She has been in work for some little time, but her only previous outing this term was at Otaki, when she just failed to take some of the stake-money. The manner in which she quickly worked to the front and then held on in the Dash Hack Handicap at Marton indicates that she can both sprint and stay. Her dam. the Paper Money mare Moutoa Treasury, was a smart sort.
