News From Cairo.
The wife of Sir Miles Lampson, British Ambassador in Cairo, has given birth to a son. Sir Miles has a grownup son and two grown-up daughters by his first wife, who died in 1930. His second wife* whom he married in 1934, and who is.little old^r than his daughters, is the only daughter of Sir Aldo* Castellani, the eminent Italian physician, who practised • for many years in Harley Street, London, and was married' to a Yorkshire woman. Nevertheless during the Abyssinian campaign, he threw in his lot on the side of Mussolini. New Venture in England. The first appointment of a woman as a racing club secretary in Britain mentioned in a recent London message shows a contrast to the position in New Zealand, where three women hold
such posts. Miss D. JE. Bray has been secretary of the Wellington Racing Club for about ten years,, while Miss M. Buchanan, of the Manawatu Club, and' Miss I. I. Fippard, of the Napier Park Club, have both held these positions5 for a number of years. Dunedin Girl Dancers Compete. At the weekly Town Hall dance in Dunedin on Saturday night a new competition, the first of its kind in New Zealand, was held—for girls only. Held to encourage. girls to dance among themselves because of the shortage of men partners, the competition attracted wide interest and drew many competitors. In the first heat there were nine entries, and the contestants had to dance the Destiny waltz, modern waltz, military two-step, and quick-step. The judging was done by popular vote. Red Cross Classes Recommence. The Kelburn sub-centre of the Red Cross Society will recommence classes in home nursing on Monday, January 12, at 7.30 p.m., in the Teachers' Training College, Kelburn. Prospective students will be enrolled at 7 p.m. Card Parties to be Resumed. The weekly card evenings of the Wellington South v African War. Veterans' Association will be resumed at its new clubroom'sV Hooson's Buildings, Courtenay Place (corner Tory Street), on Saturday night. The committee will be pleased to welcome old and new patrons.
