OHAKUNE FLOODS
ENGINEER SENT BY
PLANE
Prompt steps were taken from Wei-' lington to meet the situation which arose in Raetihi and the surrounding district from the heavy flooding which occurred on Tuesday afternoon. The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) was associated with the action taken by the Public Works Department here in sending an engineer by departmental plane to the scene of the damage,
Mr. Fraser received word 'of the floods yesterday morning and at once got in touch with the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department. Within half an hour arrangements had been made for an engineer to fly'froin Wel^ lington and Mr. Fraser was able to tell the Mayor of. Ohakune over the telephone of what had been done. He also told the Mayor to go ahead in the meantime with any essential work and to give assistance to householders where it was required.
Within the hour the engineer assigned to the job was on his way by plane and by early in the afternoon Mr- Fraser had a report from the Public Works Department on the situa-* tion.
