CRICKETER FARNES KILLED
Kenneth Fames, the England, Cambridge, and Essex amateur fast bowler, was killed on active service as the result of a flying accident. A pilot officer in the R.A.F., he went to Canada for training under the Empire scheme, and was given his wings in September at Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Fames, who was 30 and a native of Romford, Essex, played for England in Test matches against Australia and South Africa. He was 6ft 4in tall, and first played for Essex in 1930. He was in the Cambridge University team, from 1931-33. A year later he made his name for Essex by taking eleven wickets for 131 to break a long series of Yorkshire victories.
Making full use of his height, Fames was undoubtedly one of the fastest bowlers of his time. He last played for England against Australia in 1938.
