FLANKING MOVE
EFFECT IN MALAYA
FRESH RETIREMENT
(Rec. 10 a.m.) RUGBY, Jan. 6. A Singapore communique states that there have been some further withdrawals. by our troops on. the Perak front in order to deal with the enemy threat to, their left flank. There were no enemy landings south of Kuala Selangor. In Pahang the Imperial Forces had to be withdrawn from the Kuantan area.
Enemy aircraft attacked targets in Johore yesterday, causing some damage. Our anti-aircraft guns shot down one enemy plane for, certain. One other plane was damaged and was unlikely tc reach its base. Enemy plane* flew over Singapore last night at a great height. Some bombs were!; dropped, : causing very, slight civilian damage arid one civilian casualty. . SIGNIFICANCE OF LOSS. It is authoritatively stated in London that the withdrawal of the British forces in the Kuantan area meant that the important aerodrome at Kuantan has passed into enemy hands/Since Kuantan is less than 200 miles north of Singapore it seems reasonable to suppose that if and when it can be made serviceable by the Japanese they will be able to make use of fighters to protect their bombers in raids on Singapore.—B.O.W.'
