NAVAL PATROL
AUXILIARY SERVICE
ON HONORARY BASIS
A naval auxiliary patrol service is to be organised in the Dominion. Regulations making provision for its formation were gazetted last night. Enlistment in the service will be open.to any person over 16 who is a natural born or naturalised British subject, but enlistment will not absolve any person from liability for service with .any other branch of the armed forces or from liability under the National Service Emergency Regulations, 1940.
The service is to be organised on an honorary basis, but provision is made for payment and allowances to members called up for full-time continuous active service during the period of that service. No allowance 'will be paid for the use by members of "boats or other equipment belonging to them, but the Naval Board may provide oil fuel for use on duty, and may issue on loan armament or other equipment -for use by members in their boats.
Subject to money being available for the purpose, the Naval Board may authorise the payment of compensation for damage to boats incurred on duty and not due to negligence or incompetence of owners. The Naval Board is also given authority to undertake or provide for the making of running repairs to boats belonging to members while on duty. '"""
If a member of the service is killed or receives personal injury in the course of duty, compensation will be paid according to a scale to be prescribed by the1 Naval Board.
