RETAIL DELIVERIES

BRITISH REDUCTION SCHEME

* (Rec. noon.) LONDON, Jan. 2. Many delivery vans will disappear from the roads of Britain under a joint scheme drawn up by three Government departments to reduce retail deliveries to customers and save petrol. The grocer will possibly call only once a week, and the butcher and greengrocer twice. Shops may pool their vehicles and reduce their delivery areas. Shoppers will be asked to carry their purchases home. A reduction of 25 per cent, in fuel at present used by vans will, save 10,000,000 .gallons of petrol a year.
