THE CLOSE OF 1941
The Government Statistician, In reviewing business returns as they were available at November 30, noted :—
Merchandise exports decreased by 1.3 per cent, and imports 1.0 per cent, for the 12 months compared with the corresponding period of 1940. Excess of exports over imports for the 12 months reviewed amounted to £20.964,988, against £21,350,226 for the 1940 period.
Bnnl; debits (excluding Government) for 12 months ended November 30, 1940, were £999,740,000, increased to £1,034.910,000. or 3.5 per cent, more than for the 1941 period.
Average weekly net note circulation for November (£18,029.877) was the highest ever recorded, comparing with £17,872,171 In October, and £16.099.500 for November,, 1940, and £12,982,774 for November, 1939.
Sales-tax receipts for November, 1941. were £624,454, an increase of £279G above October, and £28,876 compared with November, 1940. Amount of sales tax collected during 11 months ended November. 1941, was £6,407,116, of which £3,204,061, was for ordinary purpose?! as against £3.216,360 during tiie first 11 •fionths of 1910.
Overseas arrivals and departures for 11 months of 1041 totalled 16,220, against 29,478 for eleven, months of 1010.
Standard furniture and domestic articles are lent free to bombed-out people under a Ministry- of Health scheme.
