AUCKLAND SHOPS BARE OF POTATOES

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 2. The shortage of potatoes in Auckland reached an acute stage today. Practically all greengrocers were without supplies. Many shops exhausted their stocks on New Year's Eve and most of the others sold the last of their supplies early today. In view of a statement of the Food Controller that steps had been taken to allocate market stocks between the defence forces and the public, many shopkeepers attended the city markets today in the hope of replenishing supplies. Only one firm, however, received a consignment, and it was inadequate to meet the demand. After reservations had been made for shipping and hotels, the balance was requisitioned by the defence forces. No supplies were available for retailers and the public.
