HIGHER WAGE RATES

EMPLOYERS' CASE IN ARBITRATION COURT

The case for the employers in the workers' application to the Arbitration Court under the Rates of Wages Emergency Regulations, 1940, for an increase in rates of pay to meet the increased cost of living- was opened today by .Mr. W. J. Mountjoy, secretary of the Wellington Employers' Association, representing the New Zealand Employers' Federation. Mr. Mountjoy's main submission was that the economic and financial conditions of New Zaland were by far the most important conditions for consideration by the Court, and he contended that the present conditions did not warrant the granting of the application. He emphasised that in common with others, New Zealanders should be prepared to make sacrifices towards the war effort.

The application is being heard by Mr. Justice Tyndall, with him being Mr. W. Cecil Prime, employers' representative, and Mr. A. L. Monteith, workers' representative. Mr. A. president of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, is advocate for the applicant unions.
