M;B.E.. is a prisoner ol war. -He--Was- posted as missing u< June, but his mother in Wellington lias now received a letter from him stating that he is a- prisoner and wasto br transferred from Crete to the mainland. ..■-.-.
Mr. c. H- Bass left. Wellington last night, 'en route for Australia.
Mr. R. D. Vincent, who has been cit> paymaster of Christchurch for twenty two and a half years, has retired. He was tendered a social function at which the Mayor (Mr. E- H. Andrews) presided. Many present and past council lor? attended Tributes were paid to Mr. Vincent, and on behali of the council and" staff the Mayor presented him with a leather armchair, a pipe, and a tobacco pouch.
