"MAGNIFICENT ACTION"

Lord Galway's Message

The following cablegram dated November 25 has been received from Lord Galway, former Gov-ernor-General of New Zealand, by the Frime Minister (Mr. Fraser):— "Heartiest congratulations on magnificent action of New Zealand troops in Libya." The Prime Minister has sent the

following reply:—"lt is with very great pleasure that I acknowledge your telegram of congratulations. The Government and people of New Zealand are watching the events in Libya with intense interest and justifiable pride in the splendid achievements of the New Zealand Division. This further indication of your continued interest in the Dominion and.its overseas forces is most warmly appreciated. Regards."

of social medicine that such activities as baby health centres', school medical inspection, and ante-natal work have become more and more separated from the general medical work of the community. This scheme would restore the bond between the general practitioner and social services." -

The chairman of the. National Health Council (Dr. J. L. Cumpston) said that each State would have a central administrative staff forming a consultative council. This would comprise a commissioner receiving £2000 a year, who must be a public health officer trained in public health administration, a public health deputy, two clinic deputies, a staff deputy, and a hospitals deputy.

Salaries for doctors would range from £800 for junior general practitioners to £1650 for senior physicians and surgeons.

The Minister of Health (Mr. Holloway) will forward details of the scheme to the States for consideration. A conference of representatives of the States, the medical profession, and other interested organisations will probably be called next year to discuss the broad outlines of the proposals. ■-
