KATAN BEATS ATKINS
VERDICT ON POINTS
WRESTLING AT TOWN HALL
John Katan, Canadian wrestler, received a warm welcome back to the Wellington ring last night and his win on points against Tred Atkins was extremely popular with the large crowd at the Town Hall. Each man secured a fall, Atkins with a slam following jolts in the fourth round and Katan with his octopus clutch in the sixth. Katan was clearly on top in the last two rounds.
Although Katan was ready to trade jolts— and punches—with Atkins at any time he forced the Australian to do more actual wrestling than usual. In such exchanges Katan held the advantage, although Atkins made him work for his points. The bout was vigorously contested all the way. Katan weighed 16st 101b and Atkins 17st 81b. Mr. AH Jenkins was the referee. THE PRELIMINARIES. Results of the amateur preliminary bouts are:—j. Perry (Kilbirnie) beat Bell (Hutt), by two falls; T. Hankey (Kilbirnie) beat B. Vesty (Hutt), by two falls; R. McColl (Kilbirnie) beat F. McDonald (Koolman's), on points; K. Molloy (Koolman's) beat T. Penny (Army), by one fall. In a five-round professional bout B. Monastra (list 61b) beat Driver Reid (12st 21b), who was incapacitated when he crashed outside the ring after they had secured a fall apiece. Mr. *Ray Allen was the referee.
