CRICKET

SENIOR MATCHES

ANOTHER KEEN SERIES

ARMY AND KARORI LEAD

A damp atmosphere with some fog had Its effect upon play In the Wellington Cricket Associations competitions on Saturday afternoon. It was not wholly an adverse effect, as many of the batsmen went their way briskly and Eood scores were quite plentiful. In each of * the two matches at the Basin Reserve over 400 runs wer« scored. "One match of the series was drawn, and other results included wins by the two leading teams, Army and Karori. The Army wasted no time in chasing a solid score by Welling-' ton College' Old Boys and had a couple of wickets in hand at the finish of an interesting match. Midland batted freely against Wellington and declared at "3.56 p.m. Wellington had a fighting chance, but their solid progress fell a little short of tlie requirement after a claim for some extra minutes of play %vas granted. For all the scoring in this match neither side gained any championship points. At one stage of the Karori-Hutt match at Karori Park visibility was so poor that play was halted for half an hour. Up to this stage Karori had shaped well,- but the last seven wickets fell for 8 runs. Hutt started poorly but. improved, only to fall away again with r win in sight. Splendid bowling performances -by Riddolls nnd P. D. Wilson were the main features of the Petone-University match at Petone. Scoring was moderate, few Ibatsmen getting far. Kilbirnie; scoring well at little cost, set out to force an outright win over Air Force. In this they did not succeed. Air Force improving somewhat after a-first innings collapse. Institute batted for only two and a half hours for their, 263 for eight, and Rogers, who. top scored with 73, gave a brilliant exhibition of batting, during which he hit eight; 4's and two 6's. Johnsonville could not avert defeat, though Williams made another fine stand. RESULTS AND POINTS.
