PINED FOR BOOKMAKING

Fines for bookmaking were imposed upon two men who appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. Maurice Crane, hairdresser, was fined £50 and costs, and Frank Spenser Cooze, hairdresser, £25 and costs. Counsel for Crane (Mr. C. M. Turner) said that the defendant had been in hospital, and when he came back to work he found that his business was in a bad way. In these circumstances he thought that he would make a certain amount of easy money by taking small bets from-his customers. Mr. R. Hardie Boys, for Cooze, said that the offence committed by the defendant had been as ■ small as it could possibly be in order to require him to face a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Detective-Sergeant W. McLennan prosecuted.
