PETROL COUPONS STOLEN
SCRAP PAPER CONSIGNMENT
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Two brothers who appeared in the Magistrate's Court this morning admitted having bought petrol with coupons recovered from a cargo of scrap paper at Lyttelton on May 26. The* were Edgar and Harold Backhouse, who pleaded guilty to buying a quantity of petrol in a manner unauthorised under the Oil Fuel Emergency Regulations. Each was fined £2 10s and costs by the Magistrate. Mr. McLachlan. Harold Backhouse formerly worked as a wharf labourer, said DetectiveSergeant McClung. While employed unloading a consignment of scrap paper from a ship at Lyttelton one of the packages burst and some petrol coupons fell out, Backhouse later used some of them, to buy twelve gallons of petrol and gave others to his brother, Fdgar. Further coupons were given away and still more were destroyed. The coupons given away were recovered. There was no suggestion that the two accused were the only men concerned in the theft of coupon? and both had been very frank.
