MARRIED MEN
MILITARY SERVICE
BALLOT UNLIKELY THIS YEAR
SINGLE MEN'S CASES
The Minister of National Service (Mr. Semple), ,in an interview, stated that the present indications were that it was not likely that a ballot for married men, either for Territorial service or overseas service, would be necessary before next year.
When asked if he could give any indication as to when the first ballot for married men for overseas service might take place, Mr. Semple said that under normal circumstances it would probably be necessary to take a ballot for married men towards the end of January or early in February, 1942, but that it was too early to say just when the firsti Gazette calling up married men for overseas service would be issued. ,
"As far as is possible/ continued Mr. Semple, "married men will be called for overseas service about five to six months before they will normally be required to enter camp, so that they will have ample time to put their affairs in order before proceeding overseas. Before any married men are called up a thorough review will be made of all single men whose service has been postponed."
The Minister added that appeal boards had already commenced the review of appeals, and in future every man's case would be reviewed at approximately six-monthly intervals.
