HAPPY ENDING WINS

BIG RACE AT BULLS

STAR ZONE TAKES SPfiINT

Although overhead conditions were quite pleasant at Bulls on Saturday, when the Rangitikei Racing Club presented its spring fixture, the track was holding. There was an excellent crowd, with speculation brisk throughout the day, and although favourites did not fare particularly well, §21,963 was handled, as compared with £20,441 10s last year; A HARD-FOUGHT FINISH.

The Opaki trainer B. Burgess saddled up both Gladynev and Happy Ending for the J. P. McKelvie Memorial Handicap, and the latter shared the position' of favourite with Kotua. The judgment was sound, for the pair fought out the finish, Happy Ending, who did not appear to appreciate the heavy going over much, worrying Kotua Sut of the major award after the Kincardine mare had led over the concluding half-mile. Master Cyklon came from sixth on the turn to take third place from Classform, who came home surprisingly well. Aurora s Star looked likely on the turn, but she was under a hard ride at the time and failed to go on with it. Little Kooin and Gladynev, both of whom are New Zealand Cup candidates, attended one another home, neither being in the picture at any stage of the jourBackers were rather off the mark in the Clifton Handicap, the winner, Star Zone, being at double figures on the totalisator. However, on the basis 01 her Trentham form she merited better support. Drawn on the extreme outside, she began well, but drifted in the middle stages, only to make a fast move crossing the top and range up to Wings of Song, who had taken over from Race Away. Star Zone finished on solidly to beat the disappointing Wings of Song by a good half-length, with Sunny Knight three lengths away and a neck in front of Glaciate. Saxon Tor, who was reluctant to do a preliminary and also to come into line, got away badly, and although he ranged up approaching the straight entrance he could not get closer than RENASCOR THE HURDLES.

A little-fancied runner in Rena'scor annexed the Sandon Hurdles very decisively, for after throwing out a challenge to Dv Maurier at the second last obstacle he drew clear to win by over half a dozen lengths. Dv Maurier went to the front going along the back, but made a faulty jump three furlongs from home and commenced to weaken, Arabic getting up to beat him for second place. Segra, after being a long way back, finished on for fourth, ahead of Hagen, who is improving in his fencing. Teddy Boy was prominent early but he went sore about five furlongs from home and was pulled up. Taken to the front going into the back. Hokumai stayed there to the close in the Rangitikei Plate, having an advantage at the post of about a length and a half from Beau Monde, who showed improved form. Great Quex and Te Oriko both held on fairly well to fight it out for third without throwing out a serious threat. Amatory and Squeers both stopped, and Greek Idol trailed the field all the way.

HIGH CLASS NARROWLY.

After attending Croupisino across the top in the Ohakea Hack Handicap, High Class ranged up to the leader and he then worried Croupisino out of the winning bracket by a neck. The pair were both tiring at the close, but they were two lengths clear of Triple Crown, who came home solidly to touch off Roeon for third, the topweight having been a little slow to begin. Lady Derby stopped after being prominent to the straight entrance, but Goldform came home fairly well.

With five defections from the Trial Stakes, a division was avoided, but with 22 runners a fair proportion of the field failed to begin. Polario, Matalite, King's Mark, and The Champ were the first to show out, but coming across the top Matalite had taken charge, with The Champ handy, and the latter challenged in the straight to beat his fellow-representative from Trentham home by about a length. Then came Polario two lengths back, with Sea Quex a fair fourth. The Champ was bought after the Foxton Meeting at Levin, and has brought a quick return to his new owner, Mr. S. J. Newlands, of. Wellington.

DEFINITELY SUPERIOR.

Backed^ very confidently . for the Parewanui Hack Handicap, GraecoRoman took charge early and stayed there to the close, winning with a good deal in hand from Stratford, who was being hard ridden to keep his place on the turn. Auburn Lad was unlucky in that he suffered a check going along the back and' he • did well to get up for third, with Kehua finishing on in fourth place. Neither Davilia nor Laughing Song was well placed early, and they could not make any impression over the last two furlongs. Olein ran quite a fair race.

The final event, the Farewell Handicap, was productive of the best finish of the day, Elusory beating Soutane narrowly but well, with Caroline Bay and Golden Moon following at head intervals. Sweet Anne commenced brilliantly to pilot Parlato, Elusory, Golden Moon, Saint Tor, and Erinscourt, who were practically in line for the first furlong. Sweet Anne gradually drew clear of Parlato, with Caroline Bay moving forward along the rail, whereas Elusory and Saint Tor were wider out. Inside the distance the runners were spread across the track, and in a stirring finish Elusory came through to beat Soutane, with Caroline Bay and Golden Moon close up, the last-named having come along the rail. Miss Hallomet, badly placed on the turn, came home well for fifth. Sweet Anne stopped.
