BEFORE MARRIED MEN
No one will question the justice of j the recommendation by the Dominion Council of the N.Z.R.S.A. that, before married men are called up for service overseas (1) the cases of all single men who have been exempted or had their appeals adjourned sine die be reviewed; (2) all men eligible for overseas service who have failed to report when called up be forced to fulfil their obligations; (3) single men on home services who are eligible for overseas service be released from such service. General assurances have been given by the Government that such steps would be taken, but the public should be told definitely that they have been taken and shown the results. Exemptions and adjournnients should, of course, be reviewed, from time to time, as reasons that were adequate twelve months ago may be quite insufficient today. This applies also to the retention of fit single men on home
service. No doubt many, if not most, of these have gone already at their own urgent wish, but all other cases should also be reviewed. The reference to defaulters needs no emphasis; but in this, as with conscientious objectors, what the public want now is a statement of what has been done —not what is proposed.
