MURDER CHARGE
STOREKEEPER'S DEATH
MAORI ON TRIAL
(P.A.) WANGANUI, October 28. i The trial of a Maori, Pipi Katene, labourer, aged 28, on a charge of murdering Arthur Harding Parkinson, storekeeper, of Waitotara, aged 79, on August 4 is being held in the Wanganui Supreme Court before Mr. Justice Smith.
Mr. N. R. Bain, Crown Prosecutor, is appearing for the Crown, and Mr. V. B. Willis for Katene.
Mr. Bain, in outlining the case, said the evidence would show that Katene had not worked very much. He had been receiving social security benefits and these had been stopped because he had not taken work offered him. He was regarded by the Department as being voluntarily unemployed. A safe and cash box in Parkinson's store had been rifled and cash and cheques stolen. The Crown alleged that the accused entered the store, hit the old man over the head with a mallet, and then killed him with an axe. The accused, the prosecution asserted, was connected with the crime by fingerprints on cheques found in his possession and a statement made to the police after being cautioned.
The Crown evidence was along the lines of that given at the preliminary hearing in the Magistrate's Court!
