AIR-RAID VICTIMS
HOAX IN LIVERPOOL
(Rec. 2 p.m.) LONDON, October 28.
Unable to find the bodies of two air raid victims in time for the funeral, two men filled coffins'with sand, after which a funeral service was held and a burial performed without the relatives being aware of the hoax.
There was a sequel to this in Liverpool today when Michael Daly, manager of a firm of undertakers, and John Murnaghan, formerly a clerk and now a soldier, were bound over for two years for causing a false entry to be made in a burial register.
The prosecutor said the defendants made considerable efforts to find the bodies. The search was continued till the funerals were overdue, the relatives waiting.
There was no evidence that the defendants had any motive but to spare the relatives pain.
