MINERS TO STRIKE

U.S. LOSES VITAL COAL

(Rec. l N p.m.) WASHINGTON, Oct. 26.

Rejecting a request by President Roosevelt that work should not cease in the steel industry's vital coal mines in the southern Appalachian area, Mr. John L. Lewis ordered 53,000 members of the United Mine Workers' Union out on strike. The mines are owned by steel companies and supply coal which is needed urgently for the war programme.

The dispute is chiefly over a claim for compulsoi'y unionism in the mines.
