MONSTER EGG
"ELECTION" EFFORT? 7 .
A rumour in Parliament Buildings last night that the Government had hatched an "election" egg that could not possibly be matched by the Opposition was confirmed when pressmen were invited to inspect the phenomenon at the office of the Minister of Agriculture (Mr. Barclay).
The egg, which was described by the Minister as the effort of an Invercargill White Leghorn hen to live up to the Standards Bill, measured 8£ by 5 inches and weighed 9| ounces. It filled an ordinary electric light bulb packet and made a real handful when picked up. Apart from appearing slightly elongated alongside a normal egg it was well formed.
The owner- of the hen which produced the monster egg is Mrs. McDonald, of Beatrice Street, Invercargill. The hen is an average hen and is suffering no ill effects from its stout effort. The w*eight of a standard egg is two ounces. '
