HANDLING CARGO
AUCKLAND WHARVES
A COMPLETE AGREEMENT
IMPROVED OUTLOOK
(P.A.)
AUCKLAND, This Day.
"Complete agreement has been reached between the Waterfront Control Commission and the Auckland Waterside Workers' Union," stated the Minister of Labour (Mr. Webb) in commenting on a conference between the parties which has extended over two days.
Among the questions on which amicable agreement was reached was the reinstatement of two waterside workers who were dismissed, last January for refusing to handle produce during the cool store dispute at the King's Wharf and the reintroduction of the contract system of handling cargo, Mr. Webb said. It had been decided to again adopt the contract system as far as possible in working all ships, and the union delegates would seek endorsement of the conference findings when the workers hold their monthly stopwork meeting. A commencing date would be arranged by the commission and union. It was generally agreed that the present method of handling cargo on some of the wharves could be much improved, Mr. Webb added. The whole question of quicker and cheaper handling of cargo was under consideration. If the commission and men approached the Auckland Harbour Board -with practical proposals consideration would be given to them.
