NAVY'S HEAVY TOLL
ELEVEN VESSELS HIT
TRIPOLI SET ABLAZE
LONDON, October 7,
The Royal Navy has scored hits on eleven more enemy ships on their way to North Africa, and at least four of these have been sunk. British submarines sent to the bottom an Italian torpedo-boat, a supply ship of 3500 tons, an escort vessel, and a sailing ship laden with Italian troops. In addition, two tankers, of about 6000 tons each, two transports of ' 5000 tons, and one large ship and two medium supply ships were hit by torpedoes. A report tonight gives a vivid dei scription how the R.A.F. deals with enemy shipping to North Africa even if it escapes British submarines and planes on the way. SUNDAY NIGHT ATTACK. In a raid on Tripoli heavy bombers set the entire harbour ablaze with oil from a wrecked tanker. The attack j was made before midnight on Sunday. ... • The first British raider dived 4000 feet in the moonlight and planted a stick of bombs right into a tanker. Flames' then lit up shipping in the harbour. ! Other planes roaring in to the attack, saw the bonfire miles out at sea, and by its light dropped their cargoes on other ships and on lighters and barges. j 1 Soon the blazing oil spread a blanket of flames over the waters of the harbour. The attack went on for two I hours, and when it ended the harbour j was still alight. '
