PROLONGING LIFE
BRITISH PARLIAMENT
(Rec. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, October 7.
A Bill to prolong the life of the present Parliament for a further year was read a second time without a division. In the short debate it was pointed out that a register of electors was last prepared in 1939 and now was very stale, there having been great movements of population because of v/ar services.
The practical impossibility of compiling a new register was stressed. Contested by-elections, it was emphasised, showed that there was no difference of opinion as to the necessity of prosecuting the war to the end. A Bill was also read a second time which prolongs the life of the existing municipal county councils for a further year.—B.O.W-.
