WAR PRISONERS
SUPPLIES OF CLOTHING
The Government had been advised by the New Zealand High Commissioner in London that it was unnecessary and undesirable that uniforms should be sent from the Dominion to New Zealand prisoners of war in Europe, said the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) in the House of Representatives yesterday in answer to an urgent question by Mr. F. W. Doidge (National, Tauranga). Mr. Jones said that the High Commissioner reported that the Red Cross in England had assured him that satisfactory arrangements had been made for all necessary replacement of clothing for Dominion and other British prisoners, and large issues had already been made at Geneva.
"The Government will go to the utmost through the International Red Cross in providing adequate and suitable clothing for our boys who are prisoners of war," he added.
Mr. Doidge said that what the Minister had said would allay some of the anxiety at present felt by parents and relatives of prisoners.
