MAJOR A. E. DOUGLAS.
■Major Alfred Ernest D6uglas, who died on Sunday at Lower Hutt, where, he had lived for the past 17 years,, was born in England in 1870. He. was educated in London. Joining the Army in 1894, he served for 30 years, mostly in the Indian Army. For seven years he was stationed at Quetta, and was also in Bombay and Poona. He served in frontier expeditions, and in the Great War gave service in East Africa, retiring with the rank of major in 1924, when, accompanied by his wife and family, he came to New Zealand. Since his retirement he had devoted considerable time to painting.
Mrs. Douglas predeceased her husband nine weeks ago. Mr. V. F. Douglas, who was for some time assistant borough engineer for Lower Hutt, and is now county engineer at Waipawa, is a son. There is also one daughter, Miss Kath. Douglas.
