CHANCE MISSED

JAPAN AND THE EAST INDIES

BRISBANE, October 6. "Japan has missed her chance of making a southward drive into the Netherlands East Indies except at a very high price," declared Mr. van der Plas, leader of the Netherlands East Indies Press delegation which is visiting Australia. He and his colleagues agreed that had Japan begun her thrust in December, 1940, she might have been successful, for then the Netherlands East Indies and Malaya were both unprepared. Mr. van der Plas is making a special appeal for Australian steel to meet the needs of the Netherlands navy.
