Mr. Fitchett served in the Great War. He was awarded his commission in the field, and was mentioned in dispatches. Early in the present war he was appointed instructor to the Hutt Valley Company of the National Mili* tary Reserve. In January, 1940, he enlisted for overseas service and later went into camp, but by the time his training was finished the age limit for j overseas service was reduced and his i application to go overseas was reject- ■ cd. Since then he has conducted j voluntary lunch-hour instructional courses. Mr. Fitchett has one son in< the Army. His father was the late Dr. Fred Fitchett, C.M.G., who was I member for Dunedin Central in Mr. Seddon's Liberal Party.

NELSON

Atmore meeting with no Labour opposition in the Nelson electorate, but it is now learned from a reliable source that there is a strong probability of a Labour candidate being selected for the seat if a General Election is held. There is no explanation of the change in the Labour attitude, but it is probably . due to the closer association of Mr. Atmore with Parliamentary members of the Democratic Labour Party which has been apparent recently.
