INVOLVEMENT IN WAR
SPEECH BY DE VALERA
NEED FOR CONSTANT
VIGILANCE
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) (Rec. 12.40 p.m.)
...-■( LONDON, October 5. "God foi? two years has saved Eire' from involvement in this savage war, •but the nation remains in the greatest danger," said Mr. de Valera, Primfe Minister of Eire, in a speech at a defence force rally in Dublin.
"Numerically we are small. We are in a geographical position which is obviously tempting to be h -ets of combatants. Nothing out constant vigilance and unflinching determination can save us. The Irish people want neither their old master nor a new one. Small nations in the path of the great Powers generally are treated with scant consideration, but so far our rights have been mostly respected; I think it is only fair to acknowledge that the belligerent, which is nearest to us, Great Britain, despite the tempting and urging of Certain propagandists, has not succumbed to them and has not behaved* unworthily.",
