TENSION AND GLOOM

BERLIN SUNDAY

FEAR OF AIR RAIDS

: LONDON, October 5. j A well-known American broadcaster who has spoken almost daily from Berlin 'for many months described today a typical Berlin Sunday. He was speaking from Switzerland. . lie called Sunday in the Third Reich just another 24 hours to get through before, the signal that another working day has begun. He drew a picture of thousands of bored Berliners wandering aimlessly up and down the streets, and compared the present with the happy, carefree days /before Hitler tried to remodel Europe. Towards evening, he said, the people look anxiously at the weather. They are more nervous about air raids on Sunday nights than pn any other night of the week, possibly because many of the heaviest attacks have occurred on Sundays, and the people go home early. "It is not very pleasant to be caught "in a strange shelter where the warden makes his own rules _ and throws his weight about," he said. "I know all this and much more and, I am glad to get away from the tension and gloom."
