HERE AND THERE
W.D.F.U. at Paraparaumu. Mrs. Tyson, vice-president of the Paraparaumu branch of the W.D.F.U., took the chair at the recent meeting, at Which Mrs. Russell tof the Townswomen's Guild) demonstrated the makir : of cane stools, and Mrs. Gilchrist, paper flowers. The hostesses were Mesdames Filton, H. A. Howell, and Bain, and Mrs. Strand was tea supervisor. Certificates Presented at Miramar. Friends and relatives of the cadets were present at a pleasant evening given by the Miramar Nursing and Cadet Division recently. Films were screened by Mr. C. Meachen, secretary, St. John Ambulance Association, and a demonstratidh: of first aid and home nursing was given by the cadets. Adult home nursing certificates, cadet proficiency, and first aid certificates were presented to the successful candi- ■' dates by Mr. Meachen, who expressed approval of the' efficiency and attendance of the cadets; - He was thanked by Miss Philips, lady superintendent of the division. ..''.. Brooklyn Townswomen. v Activities of the Brooklyn Townswomen's Guild for September included a visit to two local industries. Members of the glee and drama circles gave entertainment at the Social Club for the Blind and members'were also hostesses at the Y.M.C.A. for a recent soldiers'- tea. On the National Day of Prayer members attended evening service at the Brooklyn - Baptist Church. At the School for Officers, held during the month, the guild was well represented, and much useful knowledge was gained. Members were fortunate, at the monthly meeting, to hear Mrs. Denniston, M.8.E., chairman of the Dominion Federation, speak on "The Guild as it fits us for better Citizenship." Husbands' Night. The Lower Hutt branch of the Federation of Townswomen's Guilds held its annual "husbands' night" recently in the Eva Draper studio, which was charmingly decorated for the occasion. An entertaining programme, which included a travel talk by Mr. R. H. Nimmo, was presented before supper. Community 'singing was led by Mr. Wood. Mrs. Isobel Halligan contributed recitations, and the guild choir under Mrs. A. V. Stamp, gave two numbers.
