MISSION FROM U.S.A.

IN FRENCH EQUATORIAL

AFRICA

LONDON, October 3. A United States mission led by Colonel Cunningham has arrived in French Equatorial Africa. Colonel Cunningham immediately sent a message to the High Commissioner expressing thanks for the welcome given them by the representative of Free France.

OBJECTOF MISSION

NEW YORK, October 2,

The United States mission to FrenchEquatorial Africa includes representatives of the War, Navy, and State Departments. It will have discussions with the Free French authorities.

Officials stated that the mission did not indicate that definite plans had been adopted for closer co-operation with General de Gaulle's movement or a departure from the policy of recognition of Vichy. The mission would see what could be done for mutual benefit in the war against the Axis.

Officials emphasised that the army's interest in the mission was above that of the Navy and State Department. It is assumed that the mission will explore the possibilities of increased trade in articles needed by the United States for defence.
