DAY IN PARLIAMENT
GOOD PROGRESS MADE
Good progress was made in the House of Representatives yesterday, three Bills being passed. The Social Security Amendment Bill completed its committee stages shortly after the luncheon adjournment and was read a third time and passed. A few minutes later it was read a first time in the Legislative Council. Although the committee stage of the Bill provoked a good deal of discussion for a time, after the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Holland) had made his explanation for the withdrawal of the Opposition amendment and the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) had replied, it was generally .conceded by the Opposition that the Government amendments had met most of the objections raised. The two other Bills passed which were largely of a machinery nature, were the Coal Mines Amendment Bill and the Mining Amendment Bill. Only one or two clauses gave rise to any discussion. Before the adjournment the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) said that on Tuesday the War Damage Bill, the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill, and the Local Legislation Bill would be taken. The Reserves and Other Lands Disposal Bill might also come before the House on that day. To an inquiry from Mr. Holland as to whether the Rehabilitation Bill was to be proceeded with, Mr. Fraser said that this Bill should be introduced about Wednesday, He also said that the indications were that the session would finish next week. The House adjourned at 4.15 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
