SHEEPSKIN MARKET
COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY
QUESTION TO MINISTER
Dissatisfaction with the marketing of sheepskins was expressed by Mr. W. A. Bodkin (National, Central Otago), in association with twelve other members of the Opposition, in an urgent question to the Minister of Agriculture (Mr. Barclay) in the House of Representatives yesterday. They asked if the Minister would be prepared to cancel the appointment of one member to the Committee of Inquiry at present investigating the marketing of sheepskins. ''Mr. Barclay said that apparently Mr. Bodkin and the other members had misunderstood the purpose of the inquiry committee, the real function of which was to examine existing methods by which the contract between the New Zealand and the United Kingdom Governments regarding the supply of 'woolly sheepskins :could" * be implemented. The Government had complete confidence in'the committee man mentioned. The Minister added that the Committee at present was making a full investigation as to whether the producers of sheepskins were' securing "ull value for their produce. In the first three months of the v.T.C. as much progress has been nade as was hoped for in 18 months; more than 900 local squad- ■ rons and 400 school units have been formed.
