COST OF SCHEME
ESTIMATE EXCEEDED
It was announced in the House of Representatives today by the Minister of Health (Mr. Nordmeyer) that the latest amendments to the Social Security Act dealing with a general practitioner service would involve an additional expenditure of £200,000 over the original estimate. This, he explained, would bring the total estimated cost of the general practitioner service up to £1,400,000 a year. "At the outsets added the Minister, "the increase due to the extra fees should not exceed £200,000. The estimate of the Government for the whole service originally was £1,200,000. I think it was on the high side, but, presuming it was fairly correct, the total cost may now amount in a full year to £1,400,000." The Minister explained that this estimate excluded pharmaceutical benefits which were expected* to cost £340,000, but experience suggested that it would be well below that figure. J
