TRAFFIC DISLOCATED

TRAMS AND BUSES

SLIPS ACROSS TRACKS

Tram and bus traffic was dislocated last evening and for part of this morning to an extent hitherto unknown. Three tramway services were affected yesterday afternoon, and another today.! Motor traffic was also held up in many instances by slips. A slip containing a good deal of rock feU from the left-hand face of the cutting on the city side of the Seatoun • tunnel, blocking it. A permanent service is being run to the cutting, however, and it is hoped to have a fiveminute service by this evening. Yesterday th« Karori tunnel was temporarily blocked by a slip in the mouth of the tunnel. This was promptly cleared, but today there were two more slips, a big one in Chaytor Street, half-way between the cemetery and Karori tunnel, and another on the city side of the tunnel. It is expected that ( these slips will not be cleared until 5 p.m., but the way is'open to trams on the outer track. The Birdwood Street bus route is completely closed by a heavy and dangerous slip. This street will be out of use for probably many days. The Wadestown tram service was blocked yesterday by a slip in the centre of the cutting, and at 8 a.m. , today. another fell at the city end of !the cutting. Passengers had to transfer at the Park Street-Tinakori Road junction. There were small slips and flooding in Grant Road, and a more serious fall, now cleared, at the Barn«trd Street junction. Two slips fell in the Watt Street cutting, and it was possible to run only a single line, passengers having to walk between trams.. An enormous amount of spoil was shifted by workmen during the night, but the ground is still, moving. TREE ACROSS POWER LINES. A slip halfway up Brooklyn Hill yesterday afternoon spread over the tram tracks, and one-side tram traffic only was possible. It is all clear today. While the workmen were clearing the slip yesterday, a tall bluegum tree fell, striking the tramway power lines. There was a vivid blue flash and a sharp report, but no one was hurt
