HOME GUARD

QUESTION OF EQUIPMENT

Keen interest in the development of the Home Guard was shown by the Chief of the General Staff, Major-Gen-eral E. Puttick, D.5.0., at a "welcome home" accorded him last night by the various organisations in Hataitai Colonel A. Cowles had spoken of the enthusiasm with which Home Guardsmen had taken up their duties and of the ingenuity they had shown in improvising equipment pending the proper issue. Major-General Puttick said that he had heard a certain amount officially about the Home Guard and the National Reserve and he knew that they were doing very useful work in the general defensive arrangements of New Zealand. He sympathised with the men on the shortage of equipment and gave an assurance that it was not any question of a lack of sympathy of those controlling the equipment. It was simply a matter of meeting first needs first. As equipment became available each part of the defence forces, according to the importance attached to it, received its proper share.
