FIRE IN CITY

FUR STOCK DAMAGED

A.large crowd last night watched-a fire which broke out in premises occupied by Mr. A. Goodman, furrier, on the two top floors of a three-storey building at 54 Lower Cuba Street about 9.20 p.m. yesterday. Although the brigade, assisted by emergency* fire service members, prevented the spread of the fire to the rest of the building, a stock of furs stored in the rooms occupied by Mr. Goodman's firm is believed to have been considerably damaged. ' • '■■ When the brigade arrived flames were .shooting through the roof, and the fire had a strong hold. It is understood to have originated in the region of the lift on the ground floor and to have spread up the well to the upper floors. A heavy jet of water was sent up the lift well, and deliveries of hose were taken to all floors. Six engines, from Central, Thorndon, and Newtown, attended the fire.
