NAZI PLAN UPSET

I|?LpW TOWARDS MOSCOW

BIG ENEMY LOSSES

LONDON, September 29

The Russian success in the central sector*is reported to have been achieved against a new German attempt to reach Moscow. The Germans are said to have been completely routed.

It is reported that the German plan •was for simultaneous attacks between Hoslavl, 70 "miles south-east of Smolensk, and the important railway junction of .Bryansk, which the German commander hoped to take in his stride. The Russians counter-attacked south of Bryansk and the whole plan was thrown out of gear. Forces, which inarched south along the Desna River, made an opening which enabled counter-attacks "to be made on a front about 50 miles wide. The Germans were driven back.

The Germans are reported to have used 13 divisions, and their casualties are estimated at 20,000, with 5000 armoured vehicles lost, 1500 lorries, 200 guns, and other war material. They are said to be still retreating. A Moscow communique states that on Friday and Saturday 263 German aircraft were destroyed. The German cruiser whose destruction was reported yesterday is thought to have been a cruiser of the Koln class.
