RIMUTAKA DEVIATION
The hope that as soon as the time was opportune a start would be made with the construction of the Rimutaka deviation was expressed by Mr. J. Robertson (Government, Masterton) during the debate on the Public Works Statement in the House of Representatives' yesterday afternoon.
Survey work on the project had cost between £2000 and £3000, said Mr. Robertson, and as soon as tunnelling gear and gangs were available he b|pped the work would be started in order that a long-standing promise could be given effect to. A promise to do the work had been made by the Government in 1914, har' been renewed in 1924, and had again been renewed by the present Government in 1936, It was a big task, and it was unfortunate that just as the survey had been made the country had once more been plunged into war.
