LIBYAN OPERATIONS
NO OFFICIAL NEWS
SOUTH AFRICANS' STATION
LONDON, September 26.
No communique has been received so far about operations in Libya, but it is stated.in London that there has been a certain amount of shelling and that a few raids by enemy aircraft have been made, but do not seem to have caused any damage.
It is disclosed in Cairo that South African troops have been in control of Mersa Matruh for four months. The first South Africans to arrive in Egypt were sent to this town and ever since they have been digging themselves in. Mersa Matruh has been continuously bombed since Italy's entry into the war but so far there have been not more than a dozen South African casualties. The town itself is a mass of ruins and as the South Africans are strongly entrenched the German raids are a waste of bombs.
The main street has been called Smuts Avenue and a road has been named after the commander of the Ist South African division.
