SALES RESTRICTIONS

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—l would like to draw the public's attention, and I hope the Government's, to the practice of certain shopkeepers in the selling of articles which are stated to be in short supply. Recently my wife wished to buy some washing blue, and she was told that she could have a "quarter" if she purchased 5s worth of other goods. Not wanting anything in particular except the small purchase she just made, but wanting the blue for her wash, she purchased tea to the necessary value to enable her to secure the blue, thereby immediately becoming a hoarder. I can quote another example from, my own experience when I was refused an article by the principal suppliers unless I bought other goods but was able to buy it at a smaller shop without restriction. Can you tell me it these practices are permitted, or are they, like many other things, beyond the control of the Government?— I am, etC,> PAWILL.
