WHY SNOWDROPS HAVE GREEN SPOTS.
Long, ago, there lived a* family of tiny fairies who always wore snowywhite frocks. One day they wore gossamer slippers, instead or rosepetal shoes, on a long flight. Now, it is a terrible crime in fairyland for a fairy to wear slippers when flying on a long journey. The queen heard of it and she came hurrying with.all. her ladies, all her courtiers, and all her heralds. "You will be changed into white flowers as a punishment," said the Queen, sternly gazing on the bowed heads of the ten little fays. "Oh, your Majesty! Please not that," cried the fairies simultaneously. "I shall not
change my mind," answered the Queen, frowning until her pretty face was quite screwed up. She touched each bowed head with her golden wand and the fairies sank slowly to the ground. As they fell they became beautiful white flowers each with bowed heads. They wept and four tears fell on each little flower. There they stayed, but the Spring Painter Elves kindly painted the tears green. That is why the snowdrops have green spots, even to this day. "BUSH ELF" (12). i
