CHINA FLARES UP
BIG BATTLE RAGING
IN CENTRAL PROVINCES
(Rec. 2 p.m.) CHUNGKING, Sept. 24. The Chinese air force has hurled huge formations of planes into a big battle in the north of Hunan Province, The "Central Daily News" says that Chinese aviators attacked Japanese planes, bombed a Japanese gunboat, and. returned to their base without loss.
' It is estimated that at least 100,000 -Japanese and a similar number of Chinese are fighting in Hunan. A severe battle is raging along the entire north Hunan front. Four large Japanese detachments crossed the Milo River, but a southward drive into Hunan Province is being strongly resisted. The Japanese have also begun a southward drive in Southern Hupeh Province, and a battle is going on near the border of Kiangsi Province.
